Cannes History |
At the time when the first trains arrived in Cannes, bringing Edward VII of England, Queen Victoria, Tsarina Alexandrovna, the kings and queens of Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and Spain, sumptuous palaces, great hotels and places of amusement sprang up all over the town. The famous Croisette became a place of myth, looking out onto that wonderful bay where the Royal Regattas were held. Two casinos set the tone for the entertainment of international high society, attracting not only western aristocracy but also Maharajahs and the princes of Asia and Arabia. Clay-court tennis was invented there (in 1875 by Sir Thomas Woolfield, alias the Marquis de Carabas); golf developed there from 1890 onwards, at the instigation of Grand Duke Mikhail of Russia (founder of the Cannes golf club, in Mandelieu la Napoule); and yachting acquired its letters if nobility in Cannes. On this rich and teeming past, Cannes has built a present in which anachronistic values and contrasting genres and indissolubly mixed. Provencal folklore, stemming fromage-old local tradition, lives side by side with prestige, luxury and the manners of the jet-set society. The fishing boats in the old harbour moor in the shabow of the millionaires yatchs. The most famous restaurants serve local produce from the Forville market, renowned for its "typical" atmosphere.
