La Brouette de Grand'Mère ( 9 rue d'Otran, cannes):
This tiny hole-in-the-wall, complete with lace curtains, painted-wood front, fireplace, and old posters, could be a set for one of the festival's films. Yet it's a true-blue bistro, with a five-course menu that includes aperitif, wine, and coffee.
Auberge Provençale (10 rue St Antoine, Cannes):
Of the plethora of slightly touristy restaurants lining the long hike up into the Suquet, this ancient inn is most evocative of Old Provence. This is largely due to its age, as it claims to be the oldest restaurant in town., and the heavy old beams back up the claim. For maximum effect, reserve a table in the room with the stone fireplace that crackles pleasantly on cool days. In summer, terrace tables overlook the sea.
Chez Astoux (43 rue Felix Faure):
For seafood, this popular spot stands out among the other restaurants overlooking the leisurely tableau of Boules, pigeons, and bandstand on allées de la Liberté. Linen-covered tables on terrac sport showy, tiered platters of sparkling-fresh seafood, and bouillabaisse anchors the menu.
La mère Besson (13 rue des Frères-Pradignac)
This long standing favorite continues to please a largely foreign clientele with regional specialities such as sweet-and-sour sardines a l'escabeche, monkfish Provençal, and roast lamb with garlic purée. The formal setting, with damask linens and still lifes is lightened up with clatter from the open kitchen.
Bouchon d'Objectif (10 rue Constantine)
Popular and unpretentious, this tiny bistro serves inexpensive Provençal menus prepared with a sophisticated twist.
Montagnard (6 rue du Maréchal Joffre)
Elegant, imaginative, all-organic vegetarian cuisine - a movement just dawning in France - is served in a chic, low-key setting. Prices are surprisingly reasonable.
