The Music Lesson, Muenier (1863-1934), Paris - Luxembourg

Jules-Alexis Muenier was born in 1863 in the middle-class milieu which provided the material for the subject matter of the greater part of his painting. It was in this field that he practised his art for more than forty years until the first showing of "The Catechism Lesson" in the Paris Salon of 1909 brought him notable success. His technique and point of view were derived from his study and training with the painter Dagnan-Bouveret, whose religious subjects became enormously popular in france after 1880. Muener's late life was distinguished by an intimate friendship with Marshal Forch and his portriat of the General is the likeliness best known to most of us. In his last years Muenier became exclusively a painter of portraits.
