paris history of the Eiffel Tower |
Map of Paris - Paris Metro - 5 good reasons to rent an apartment - Guestbook
The Eiffel Tower was built to commemorate the centenary of the French Revolution, in 1889.
Out of the 700 proposals submitted, Gustave Eiffel's
was unanimously chosen.
The towers "birth" was difficult, originally a petition of 300 names was submitted oposing the construction. But the Tower is now widely accepted to be one of the most famous symbols of Paris itself.
At 300 metres (320.75m if one includes the antenna), and 7000 tons, it was the
world's tallest building until 1930.
Other statistics include:
2.5 million rivets.
It took 300 steel workers 2 years (1887-1889) to construct.
It can sway up to 12 cm in high winds.
The height varies up to 15 cm depending on temperature.
It is Made from 15,000 iron pieces (excluding rivets).
40 tons of paint were used to decorate.
There are 1652 steps to the top.
In 1889 the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII of England, opened the tower for the International Exhibition of Paris.
The Eiffel Tower was almost torn
down in 1909, but in 1910 was saved because of its antenna - it was thus used
for telegraphy and became part of the International Time Service accordingly
both French radio and television have used its structure since 1957.
The Eiffel Tower has bore witness to some strange scenes in its lifetime... In
1954 it was scaled by a mountaineer, In 1984 two English Men launched there
parachutes off its summit. In 1923 a journalist rode his bicycle from the first
level down. Accounts differ, some say he rode down the stairs, and others
suggest that he took the exterior of one of the tower's four legs which slope
outward!
The tower has three levels or platforms. The expensive Jules Verne restaurant (reservations absolutely necessary) is on the second platform and the top platform boasts a bar, souvenir shop, and also the office of Gustave Eiffel.
From all its platforms - but undoubtably the topmost is the best- the Eiffel Towers view of Paris is breathtaking, and if you can arrive one hour before sunset on a clear day it is generally agreed you are in for one of the treats of your Parisian holiday.
