On the death of the Spanish-born artist Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), who lived most of his life in France, the French State inherited many of his works in lieu of death duties. It used them to establish the Musée Picasso, which opened in 1986. The museum is housed in a large 17th-century mansion, the Hotel Salé, in Le Marais. The original character of the hotel, which was built in 1656 for Aubert de Fontenay, a salt-tax collector, has been preserved. The breadth of the collection reflects both the full extent of Picasso's artistic development, including his Blue, Pink and Cubist periods, and his use of so many different materials.
