In 1830 Louis-Philippe was proclaimed king from the steps of this building, eighteen years later the second republic was proclaimed from the same place. The original building was burned down in 1871.The present town hall was finished in 1882, the outside is encrusted with 136 statues inside we find a great staircase, chandeliers coffered ceilings, statues and caryatids inside. At the river end of the building are the offices of the mayor of Paris.
There are guided tours of the inside available once a month, but numbers are limited and a reservation is necessary.
