Situated below the Great Hall at 1 Boulevard du Palais (metro : Cité) In  the Salle des Gens d’Armes, was where the guards and servants of the royal household lived.

It was originally the dungeon of the palace. Many well known prisoners spend a brief time here, and gradually they took over the place. Even by the standards of mediaeval prisons the vilenes and filth were notorious. Twice it was swept by plague and had to be cleared out and cleansed .Its most famous time was during the revolution when it was overflowing. The main activity however was in Rue de Paris, and beyond it in the Salle de Prisonniers. This was always full, not only wit aristocrats, but with soldiers, gaolers and lawyers.
