 Napoleon’s coronation took place in front of the high altaron December 2^nd, 1804. The occasion was unusual in many ways. French kings had normally been crowned in Reims Cathedral : coronations in Notre Dame had been few, only Henry VI of England in 1430, and Mary Queen of Scots as Queen consort to Fançois II. Napoleon found the cathedral almost in ruins, but was magnificently decked out in tapestries for the great occasion. The pope was summoned from Rome to perform the crowning, but at the last moment the emperor decided the pope was unworthy of the honour, so he seized the crown, crowning himself and then his empress Josephine leaving the pope with nothing to do. The whole scene has been depicted by David in his huge painting which we can see nowadays at the Louvre.
