The marais contains Paris' oldest square, which to many people is the most beautiful (Place des Vosges). There are many fine seventeenth-century houses, with elaborate façades and courtyards, some of which we can visit. Ther are narrow, winding old streets and a population which has been there for centuries. And, permeating everything, there is a sense of history, the feeling that we may well meet a Guise or a Valois on the next corner, who will certaingly challenge us to a duel!

In the 12th century, Kind Philippe Auguste enclosed that district inside his great wall of Pariss, of which a long section can stilll be seen here. In the following century, the marsh (means "marais") was finally drained and permanent building started.
