Hotel Salé, 5 rue de Thorigny, is said to be one of the finest house among the historic hotels of le marais, although its architect Jean Boullier was little known. It was built between 1656 and 1659 for Aubert de Fontenay, who had salted away his fortune collecting the very unpopular salt-tax: hence its nickname, Hotel Salé (salted). It now houses the Musée Picasso. Many protested that this semi-derelict building was a highly unsuitable home for Picasso, but it became available just when this museum was looking for premises.
