Map of Paris - Paris Metro - 5 good reasons to rent an apartment - Guestbook
In the nineteenth century the Ile de la Cité was completely changed. Baron Haussmann, Napoleon III's Prefect of the Seine, rebuilt Paris almost completely. Haussmann disliked poky little streets and small corners; better were wise avenues abd big squares. On Ile de la Cité he was quite ruthless. He removed twenty-five thousand people and about ninety streets, with their homes, shops and taverns, all in the cause of opening up the views to Notre-Dame. In their place he built the huge modern parvis, and four enormous buildings of fonctional value, but of no architectural interest : the Hotel-Dieu hospital, the Préfecture de Police, the Trubinal of Commerce, and the Palais of Justice (the law courts).
