Point zero is a compass start set in the pavment in front of the main façade of Notre-Dame Cathedral. It is the point from which all distances are mesured in France, but it is clearly far older and more significant than that. It is the centre of the centre of the city, of France and, arguably, of Western civilization. Not the geographical centre, of course, but the spiritual, emotional and administrative heart of France. A few yard to the South stands a huge equestrian statue of Charlemagne. Immediately to the East is Notre Dame where Henry VI was crowned Kind of England and France, emphasizing cross-channel ties. A few feet below us are the remains of the Roamn civilization, recalling the eternal link with Italy. Ile de la Cité was the centre of it all!
