The Opéra Garnier was built by an architect called Charles Garnier a fairly unknown young man, who won the qualifying competition. The opera is the grandest monument of the second empire, even do it was only finished in 1875, after the fall of Napoleon III.

From the start the opera was design as much as for balls as for operas and ballets. The polytechnic ball and occasional presidential balls are still held here. It is also a place of many statues, we can find hundreds inside, and some outside too. From the entrance hall we can glimpse at the great stair case, steps made of marble, banister of onyx; framing the entrance to the auditorium are two huge caryadits, but the best way to see the building properly is to attend a performance.
