The square was originally conceived as a backdrop for a huge equestrian statue of Louis XIV, the central statue of Louis XIV was destroyed in the revolution and a  roman style column was erected by Napoleon as a monument to the Grande Armée, covered in spiral of bronze plaques made from guns capture in the battle of Austerlitz(1805).

Place Vendome has been long known as a centre for jewellery and fashion, but fashion and beauty are being pushed out by banks and offices even do we can still find a number of jewellers.

On the left side of the square we find the ministry of justice and the famous Ritz hotel where a number of famous people have stayed including Coco Channel and Princess Diana, just before her death.
