Designed by Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano was unveiled in 1977, causing mixed reactions mainly negative at the time due to the interesting contemporary architecture. Despite the controversy at its opening it has become a beloved featured of Paris. Inside we find a wonderful modern and contemporary art collection now housed on two complete floors. The permanent collection has some 44,000 pieces and around 1,400 are on display. There are always temporary exhibitions. We also find an impressive library, two cinemas which offer contemporary and classic films, two theatres, a very well equipped bookshop, a café and a small permanent market stalls.
