Lycée Victor Duruy, Paris 7th

33- The Lycée Victor Duruy. At the end of the summer of 1908 Matisse moved his academy here from Rue des Sevres. The academy begun as a suggestion from Sarah and Michael Stein, and although Matisse was not well suited to teaching it drew 120 students between the years of 1908 and 1911, when Matisse gave it up. There were between 15 and 20 American students who worked here among them were Patrick Henry Bruce and Max Webber.

Patrick Henry Bruce had his studio next door to Matisse’s and was influenced by Renoir and Cezanne. His Painting “Harmony” was exhibited in the salon des Indépendants and was highly praised by Guillaume Apollinaire. The American press wrote that Bruce was “The only American painter at all considered by French Artists”.
