On 9 January1922, Ernest Hemingway and his wife Hadley took an apartment on the fourth floor. It was here that he showed his short story “Up in  Michigan” to his new friend Gertrude Stein. Next door on the ground floor was a bal musette  (popular dance hall), while around the corner stood the Café des Amateurs, “the cesspool of the rue Mouffetard”, as Hemingway called it.
