Henry Adams rented rooms here in 1898. He was busy consulting French medieval manuscripts in preparation for his magisterial study Mont St Michel and Chartres. During his stay, the Dreyfus affair flared up again. Four year earlier, Dreyfus, a captain in the French army, had been found guilty of treason by a French military court for having turned over military secrets to the Germans. The military court, permeated by anti-Semitism, had sent him to Devil’s Island. The evidence had not only been superficial, but in part fabricated.

In a new court-martial in 1899 Dreyfus was found again guilty. Seven years later, however, he was found innocent by the supreme Court of Appeals. He was reinstated in the French Army and fought in world war I. In 1930, the publication of private German diaries conclusively proved Dreyfus’s innocence in the entire affair.
