Hotel du Mont-Blanc, formerly Hotel du Caveau. The Hotel du caveau is described by Elliot Paul, who lived there in 1925, in book The last time I saw Paris. His friend and fellow journalist William Shirer enjoyed late night parties in the cellar. A few doors away was Madame Mariette's Le Panier Fleuri, a maison close (brothel) which opened at 2:00 m and closed punctually at 2 am. Here Shirer, fresh from a Presbytarian college in Iowa, interviewed girls to establish the degree to which they were victimized, only to discover "that the girls considered prostitution as a decent means of earning more than average income". Nor did they feel, he wrote, "that they were being exploited by economics or by men". This street dates from 1284.
