Cezanne

It was fortunate for modern art (of course for Cézanne), that his father was a banker who was persuaded to permit Cezanne to study and paint without the worry of having to sell his pictures.

Paul Cezanne was born at Aix where he was the schoolmate of Emile Zola. The two boys decided early to practise the arts. Zola left home for Paris soon after finishing school. Cezanne, after a few spasmodic attempts at following his father's footsteeps, settled at the capital, where he became known as one of th emost vehement of the revolutionary painters. After 1870 an association with the Impressionnist Pissaro brought to him a new point of view that was to modify and redirect his artistic life.

Cezanne spent the last two decades of his life at Aix, with his wife and family, in a painstaking and perseverant effort to solve the problems of painting form through colors. The world of art knew nothing of his important progress and scarcely remembered his name. In 1904 there was held at Paris a retrospective exhibit of Cezanne's painting. It was then, two years before his death, that France suddenly awakened his genius.
