Corot

It was very reluctantly that Jean-Baptiste Corot's father, a fashionable milliner, permitted him to adopt painting as a career. It was the usual story: the world of commerce offered greater opportunity. But finally the Corot parents settled a small income on their son and let him have his way. Being able to travel, study, and paint without having to sell pictures, Corot had a free artistic development. Society made no demands. Up to his fiftieth year he painted in a social vacuum. He could not have existed on the proceeds of the sale of his pictures, for buyers were few and far between.

Suddently Corot adopted a new style. The new development of photography fascinated him. Quickly he took up to its point of view. This was the sort of painting his contemporaries liked, and beginning about the year 1850 they bought and ought and bought. Corot turned out pictures by the hundreds. They flooded homes and museums and public places, and were especially favored by American buyers.

He died in 1875, a wealthy man, highly respected by his contemporaries. He had gained more of fame and fortune than a career of his father's choosing might ever have brought him.
