Manet

Edouard Manet was one of the great masters of French painting. He was the son of a magistrate and began life as a cabin-boy, starting early in the habit of travel which as later to influence his manner of painting. He studied for a short time with Couture. Visits to Holland and Spain brought him into direct contact with the work of Velasquez and Hals whose brushwork became his model.

In 1863, Manet was brought violently to public attention by the bitter controversy which arose after the exhibition of his famous "Dejeuner sur l'Herbe". The picture represents a group of men and women having a picnic in the woods; the women are only partly clothed. A stultified public could not easily stomach so simple a subject treated in monumental terms. Again, in 1865, Manet had a succes a scandale, the "Olympia", a nude in everyway surroundings, unromanticized, unsweetened. Public hostility thi stime was so intense that Manet, discouraged and heartbroken, traveled to Spain.

When he returned the so-called school of Impressionism was practically established. Manet became identified with this group - Monet, Sisley, Pissarro, Renoir and Degas - but never went very far ahead in experimentation. In 1883 he died without enjoying the benefits of his mastery.
