Firmin-Auguste Renoir, son of a tailor, was born at Limoges, center if the French porcelaine industry. At the age of four he was taken to Paris with his family. At school his music teacher was the composer, Gounod, who urged upon him a career in music. But the Renoirs were poor, and it was a help to them when Auguste, at the age of thirteen, was apprenticed to a porcelain painter. During his lunch hours he ran from the pretty flowers on cups and saucers to the Louvre where he hastily copied old masters. A few years later Renoir progressed from teapots to delicate fans, and finally, at twenty, he entered the studio of Gleyre.
For twelve years he had a terrible struggle keeping alive, painting pictures in exchange for food, shelter and clothing. In 1875 he painted portraits of the Carpentier family, and thereafter, under its benevolent protection, enjoyed a modicum of financial success.
Renoir was a born painter who loved nothing more in life than the play of his brush upon canvas. There are more than five thousand of his pictures in existence. Even in old age, in Provence, where he settled late in life, he continued to paint with a brush strapped to his arm after arthritis and rheumatism had deadened his hands. Of him it may truly be said he died painting.
