Van Gogh
L’EGLISE D’AUVERS SUR OISE
LES BATEAUX DE SAINTE-MARIE

People today know more about Van Gogh's life than his painting. It was a strange life indeed, by common standards; full of impulses, frustrations and revolt.
Vincent Van Gogh was employed first by a firm of picture dealers, but could not adjust himself to the procedures and the routine of a commercial career. Then his missionary bent took him to the coal fields of Belgium where he became a lay preacher. Here, as in all things, he showed too much enthusiasm; his impulses were too direct, too sincere. The miners did not understand or welcome his zeal.
Van Gogh had always taken to drawing for amusement. At this time he began to draw and paint, nopt so much for personal pleasure, but more in terms of a professional career. He went to the south of France - to Arles - where he loved the sun and the warm rich colors of Provence. It was a difficult struggle, a life of poverty and want. Despite the hardship, Vincent's production was enormous; he painted wildly almost palpably as the result of that inner drive which had pushed him past so many frustrations and which had by now, as the result of so much disappointment and defeat, begun to derange his brain. He was, in the popular sense of teh word, a lunatic, and was interned for a short time in an asylum. He lived for the most part alone, for he could not get along with people. His friendship with the painter Gauguin did not endure; while it lasted it was interrupted frequently by violent quarrels and outbursts of uncontrolled temper.
Toward the end his fits of madness came more frequently; in lucid moments he was bogged down by profound melancholy. Despite the kindness and sympathy of his brother, Theo, and the understanding of Dr. Gachet, and admirer and true friend, the struggle proved too much for him. In 1890nhe destroyed his own life.
