  Walk in Paris!

Sart at Pont Neuf. Cross to the statue of Henri IV where steps lead down to the island tip.

Here you can circle round the island tip, or take a boat trip.

Back up to the bridge cross to enter the place Dauphine.

The place Dauphine is where Yves Montand and Simone Signoret both used to live.

In front of the Palais de Justice, turn right, then left along the Quai des Orfèvres to the Pont St-Michel.

Turn left here.

The route now takes you past the courtyard of the Palais de Justice.

Immediately after the Préfecture, turn right into the rue de Lutèce.

The rue de Lutèce leads through the flower market to the rue de la Cité.

Go left at the rue de la Cité and turn right along the Quai de la Corse.

The Quai de la Corse continues into the Quai aux Fleurs and has a view north of the Hotel de Ville and East toward the Ile St-Louis.

Circle round back to Notre-Dame.

At this point you are walking among Paris's oldest medieval streets.

Walk round Notre-Dame and through the gardens on the South side; cross the little bridge onto the Ile St-Louis.

Once the home of wealthy financiers and magistrates, the island remains remarkably conserved; keep an eye open for superb courtyards, wrought-iron details and sculpted heads.

Follow the Quai d'Orleans past some magnificient 17h-century town houses to the rue des Deux Ponts. Turn left here then right into the rue St-Louis-en-l'Ile.

Pass Paris's best ice cream maker, Berthillon, and the island's richly decorated church. The corner Hotel Lambert is reputed to be the finest mansion of this period in Paris, designed by Le Vau in 1640.

Tutrn left alonfg the Quai d'Anjou.

At no. 17 Quai d'Anjou, a house with a fine balcony, both Baudelaire and Théophile Gauthier once lived here. At no. 19 is the mansion where Camille Claudel lived and worked.

Cross the Pont Louis-Philippe, with its stunning view along the Seine.
