- France is one of the world's most industrialised nations, with some 40% of the work-force employed in the industrial sector. About half of the economy's earnings come from industrial production. However, there is poor coordination between academic research and the companies that might turn good ideas into products, and the country has fewer large corporations - an important source of private capital and investment in research and development - than other industrialised nations of similar size.
France can lay claim to being the largest agricultural producer and exporter in the EU, with significant production of wheat, barley, maize (corn) and cheese. The country is largely self-sufficient in food, except for certain tropical products such as banana and coffee.
