There are more than enough stars and wannabes in Paris to lunch another galaxy. Below is a list of some prominent characters who have been part of Paris life during recent years or decades.
Isabelle Adjani:
Born in Paris of a German mother and a Turkish father, Adjani started acting aged 14 and later joined the Comédie Francaise. She became famous with Truffaut's Adele H in 1975. In 1981 she won the prize for best actress for her role in James Ivory's Quartet .
Catherine Deneuve:
A blonde beauty propulsed to fame by Director Roger Vadim in the 1960s. Jacques Démy's Les Parapluies de Cherbourg and Polanski's Repulsion sealed her destiny. Her face was a model for every town hall statue of Marianne .
Gérard Depardieu:
His bulky muscular frame is now world-famous, following major roles in films by Wajda, Truffaut, Ferreri, Pialat and Resnais. Depardieu recently turned into directing, with Tartuffe . He divides his time between tending his Burgundy vines and his Parisian apartment.
Serge Gainsbourg:
Although he died aged 62 in 1990, Gainsbourg's influence on French rock music and youth culture continues. Iconoclastic, with a sardonic humor inspired by Surrealism, he revolutionized French chanson , changing the writing and sonority of sung French. He was married to Jane Birkin, and their daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg is now a talented young actress.
Jean-Paul Gautier:
The ultimate French Fashion designer of the 1980s, this recognized enfant terrible introduced the androgynous look, baroque caricatures and extraordinary fabrics. He started designing at Cardin's and created his own label in 1976.
Joel Robuchon:
This creator of everyone's dream cuisine is based in his 16th-arrondissement restaurant. A leading nouvelle cuisine chef, he started at the ovens aged 15 and worked his way up to cook under André Moreau at the age of 21.
Yves Saint-Laurent:
Born in Algeria in 1936, YSL divides his time between Marrakesh and Paris. He designed for Christian Dior from 1957 to 1960 and founded his own fashion house in 1962. The first couturier to introduce prêt-à-porter , he developed licensing for accessories, thus revolutionizing the fashion business. He is now retired.
