History: The Sun King and Paris
![]()
The 17th-century in France, which became known as Le Grand Siècle (the great century), is epitomized by the glittering extravagance of Louis XIV (the Sun King) and his court at Versailles. In Paris, imposing buildings, squares, theaters and aristocratic hotels (mansions) were built. Beneath this brilliant surface lay the absolute power of the monarch. By the end of Louis XIV's reign the cost of his extravagance and the waging almost continuous war with France's neighbours led to a decline in the monarchy.
- Where to see the Sun King's Paris?
Many 17th century mansions such as Hotel Lambert still exist in Paris, but not all are open to public. However, the Hotel des Invalides, the Dôme Churchs, the Palais du Luxembourg and Versailles, all give a magnificient impression of the period.
