Winter in Paris
Paris rarely sees snow; winter days tend to be invigorating rather than
chilly. There are jazz and dance festivals, candlelit Christmas
church services and much celebrating in the streets over the New
Year. After New Year, the streets seem to become slighty less
congested and on bright days the riversaide quays are used as the
rendezvous point of strollers and lovers.
December:
- Christmas illuminations (until January) in the Grands Boulevards,
Opéra, Ave Montaigne, Champs Elysées and rue du Faubourg St-Honoré.
- Crèche des Andes (early December-early January), under a canopy
in Place de l'Hotel de Ville, Marais. Lifesize Christmas crib in the South
American tradition.
- Horse dans Pony Show (1st fortnight), parc des Expositions, Porte
de Versailles.
- Paris International Boat Show (1st fortnight).
January:
- Commemorative mass for Louis XVI (Sun nearest to 21 Jan),
Chapelle Expiatoire, 29 rue Pasquier 75008.
- Fashion shows, summer collections.
February:
- Carnaval, Quartier dz St-Fargeau.
- Fête de l'Imaginaire (last week, for 4 months), Maison des
Cultures du Monde, 101 boulevard Raspail, 75006. Ethnic
exhibitions/performances from around the world.
- Floraisons (all month), Parc Floral de Paris, Bois de Boulogne,
Bois de Vincennes and Parc de Bagatelle. Displays of crocuses and
snowdrops.
